How to buy a vehicle on auction at GoBid

9. The Golden Rule: View before you bid.

9.1. It is important that you view vehicles to fully understand the condition of any vehicle you are interested in buying, before you place any bid.

9.2. GoBid will not accept liability where Customers did not exercise their right to view vehicles in order to familiarise themselves with their condition, irrespective of the reason for them not viewing.

9.3. Viewing is a free service, and you do not need to pay any fees to view.

9.4. How to view online: View all vehicles at www.gobid.co.za.

9.5. How to view in-person: If you are unsure of the condition of the vehicle presented online, we encourage you to view in-person at any of our GoBid branches before placing a bid.

9.5.1. Viewing is based on a "first come, first served" basis. You may only view vehicles currently for sale. You cannot view vehicles shown on the website as Coming Soon.

9.5.2. You are not allowed to bring tools to the branch.

9.5.3. You cannot test drive vehicles.

9.5.4. Most of our branches are open Monday to Friday 8am to 4pm, excluding public holidays. For specific branch opening and closing times, please visit our Contact Us Page.

10. Sales Channels

10.1. Live Auctions are the sale of many vehicles, packed as "Lots". Each Lot is sold in number order one-by-one on the same day. Live Auctions can be held either Online Only, Branch Only or Online + Branch. See our next Live Auction dates here.

10.2. Timed Auctions are the sale of individual vehicles over a few days. New stock is added daily to Timed Auctions.

11. Condition of Vehicles

11.1. All vehicles are sold as "Motor Salvage", irrespective of their condition, and therefore sold "as is".

11.2. By bidding, customers confirm they have inspected the vehicle and accept its current state. No warranties or guarantees are made on any vehicle sold.

11.3. All Motor Salvage has a vehicle Code which is aligned to your NaTIS Registration Paper (Logbook) and the Code of Motor Salvage:

11.3.3. Code 3A 'Scrapped Vehicle'. Can only be bought by approved wreck dealers to strip for parts only.

11.6. Mileage & Value: Odometer readings and Estimated Retail Values are representations only and are not guaranteed for accuracy.

However, GoBid is still selling these vehicles in a salvage condition as they may need repairs to be in a fully working condition, and therefore also sold "as is".

11.10. Branding: Previous company signage may be removed. If any branding remains at the time of purchase, the Customer is legally required to remove it before the vehicle is driven on public roads.

11.11. Personal Effects: Any personal items found in the vehicle may be removed by GoBid prior to sale.

17.3. Collection times are office hours (Monday to Friday 8am – 4pm) for most branches and excludes public holidays. We do not allow collections over weekends. For specific branch times, please visit our Contact Us Page.

17.4. GoBid advises all Customers to send a towing operator of their choice to collect and deliver the vehicle to you. Please do not send tow trucks to collect vehicles until you have a Release Note. The cost of transportation is for your own account.

17.5. If you send a tow truck or Third Party to fetch your vehicle, please sign and complete the relevant section on the Release Note authorizing us to release your vehicle to them, before they come to any GoBid branch. We will also need a copy of your identification document, as well as a copy of their identification document at the branch.

17.6. GoBid will not accept liability for damages as the result of vehicles being loaded onto any towing transport. GoBid is happy to assist in bringing the vehicle to the respective tow truck, but it is in fact their responsibility to load it, and consequently any damages should be for their account. Please make sure you deal with towing operators who have insurance.

17.7. In order to ensure the fastest possible service delivery to all GoBid Customers collecting vehicles, GoBid will not assist any towing operator to move other vehicles on their load (i.e. vehicles not purchased at GoBid) in order to uplift a GoBid vehicle. This is non-negotiable. Please communicate this with your towing operator to avoid delays and ask them to plan their loads in advance.

17.8. When you receive a Release Note, the risk and responsibility of the vehicle falls on you as the Customer, and no losses may be claimed against GoBid.

17.9. Collection of vehicles from our premises means the Customer has accepted the condition and details of the vehicle sold.

18. Deposit Refunds

18.1. If you have no outstanding Sales Orders, you can Request a Refund of your Deposit.

18.4. Refunds will be done in 5 to 7 working days. Upload all documents to avoid delays.

18.5. You can also keep your Deposit on your profile for you to purchase another vehicle.

19. NaTIS Registration Papers (Logbook)

19.1. GoBid will complete a Notice of Change of Ownership (NCO) and submit information to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) NaTIS system which regulates ownership of all vehicles in South Africa.

19.2. Customers not in possession of a South African Driver's License or Traffic Register Number (TRN) must first go to their local Licensing Authority with their ID and ask to be "Introduced on the NaTIS system". Delays in change of ownership due to purchasers not being on the NaTIS system are the sole responsibility of the purchaser.

19.3. The Document Handling Fee charged by GoBid is not an "On the road" fee.

19.4. Change of ownership for Code 2 (Used) vehicles

19.4.1. Change of ownership must be completed within 21 days of your purchase as per the Road Traffic Act 1989.

19.4.2. Once confirmation is received from the RTMC, GoBid will email you a RC2 (Online Registration Release Letter).

19.4.3. Take your RC2, identification document and proof of current address to your local Licensing Authority. GoBid suggests that you take copies of your documents (as well as your originals) to avoid delays. Then complete an application for Registration and Licensing of Motor Vehicle (RLV blue form) and pay your annual licensing fees and dealerstocking fee to them. Your local Licensing Authority will then print your original ownership RC1 (Certificate of Registration in Respect of Motor Vehicle) also known as NaTIS Registration Paper (Logbook).

19.4.4. Annual license fees are payable by all motor vehicle owners yearly, but the dealerstocking fee is once-off. Both these fees are for the South African government and not a GoBid fee.

19.4.5. If you are a Company, you will need to indicate on the RLV form if you are dealerstocking (licensing not liable) or registering in your business (licensing liable). We suggest asking for a 161 printout on all transactions which are dealerstocked to ensure the teller at your local Licensing Authority has not made an error, as this print out will indicate if they have done the change of ownership as "dealerstocking" (no licensing) or "business reg" (licensing liable).

19.4.6. Some Code 2 vehicles may be marked as "Subject to Clearance". Please request a copy of the NaTIS Registration Paper (Logbook) from GoBid by emailing natis@gobid.co.za in order to complete a Police Clearance on your vehicle. Once you have done your clearance, you need to submit it to your local Licensing Authority to remove the "Clearance Required" status before we can complete your change of ownership. Once the "Clearance Required" status is lifted on your vehicle, please email a copy of your clearance to natis@gobid.co.za so that we know we can proceed with your change of ownership.

19.5. Change of ownership for Code 3 (Rebuilt) vehicles

19.5.1. If you want to repair your Code 3 and use it on the road:

19.5.1.1. First repair your vehicle.

19.5.1.2. When you are ready to do the Police Clearance, request a copy of the NaTIS Registration Paper (Logbook) by emailing natis@gobid.co.za.

19.5.1.3. Once you have the Police Clearance, you must take the clearance to your local Licensing Authority to remove the "Clearance Required" status.

19.5.1.4. Once the "Clearance Required" status is lifted on your vehicle, please email a copy of your clearance to natis@gobid.co.za so that we know we can proceed with your change of ownership.

19.5.1.5. The RTMC NaTIS system will reject change of ownership on Code 3 vehicles, unless the "Clearance Required" status is lifted. Once we have changed ownership, you will have to do a Roadworthy with your vehicle. This is for your account.

19.5.1.6. GoBid will then receive the original RC1 (Certificate of Registration in Respect of Motor Vehicle) also known as your NaTIS Registration Paper (Logbook) and send it to you via courier.

19.5.1.7. Take your RC1 to your local Licensing Authority and pay your annual licensing fees and dealerstocking fee to them.

19.5.1.8. Annual license fees are payable by all motor vehicle owners yearly, but the dealerstocking fee is once-off. Both these fees are for the South African government and not a GoBid fee.

19.5.1.9. We anticipate that in 2026, the RTMC will move all Code 3 transactions to the RC2 process and will not allow us to draw original RC1s on your behalf as they migrate all transactions online.

19.5.2. If you want to strip your Code 3 for parts:

19.5.2.1. Complete the Code 3A Affidavit emailed to you with your Tax Invoice.

19.5.2.2. If you purchase a Code 3 and decide to strip it instead of repairing it, GoBid will not refund the Document Handling Fee as we are still required to process multiple transactions prior to sale.

19.5.2.3. Email the signed Code 3A Affidavit to natis@gobid.co.za as soon as possible, so that we can complete the record on the RTMC NaTIS system and mitigate risk to you.

19.6. Change of ownership for Code 3A (Scrapped) vehicles

19.6.1. If you purchase a Code 3A, it is mandatory that you complete the Code 3A Affidavit and return it to us via email to natis@gobid.co.za as soon as possible, so that we can complete the record on the RTMC NaTIS system and mitigate risk to you and your Secondhand Goods Certificate.

19.6.2. You will not receive a NaTIS Registration Paper (Logbook) and by law you are not allowed to repair this vehicle and put it back on the road.

20. General

20.1. The date of first registration on your NaTIS Registration Papers (Logbook) is not always the year model.

20.2. Failure to change ownership by GoBid due to delays caused by you will result in your GoBid account being blocked.

20.3. Some vehicles may be marked as "Paper Delay". Please allow up to 10 business days for change of ownership.

20.4. When buying as a Company, GoBid will first attempt to dealerstock vehicles as "Motor Dealer Stock" into your Company name. If you are not open for dealerstocking, we will then do change of ownership into your Company name as "Business Registration: Licensing liable" where licensing fees with be liable by you. GoBid will not accept liability for license fees owed by you the RTMC.

20.5. If change of ownership is rejected due to (1) the Company not being open for dealerstocking, or (2) the incorrect Proxy information being given to GoBid, the Customer will be liable for delays.

20.6. NaTIS Registration Papers (Logbook) will only be given to the purchaser, unless they have sent a letter authorising us to release the NaTIS Registration Papers (Logbook) to a third party.

20.7. Any fines received from the date a vehicle is sold to you, whilst change of ownership is in progress, will be transferred to your GoBid account.

20.8. By law, vehicle(s) bought for export, must first be registered in your name before you may proceed with exportation. GoBid does not have an export license.

21. Breach of Sale

21.1. GoBid reserves the right to take 10% of your Sales Order total to a maximum of your GoBid deposited amount as a penalty for any Breach of Sale.

21.2. If a Customer has paid for their vehicle (Tax Invoice generated), the sale is final and cannot be cancelled by the Customer. In this case, the Customer has the option to sell their vehicle on the GoBid website as "consignment without reserve".

21.3. If a Customer is frequently in Breach of Sale, his/her GoBid account may be limited to one sale a time or permanently blocked (GoBid Blacklisted).

22. Health and Safety
